Engineering: GENCO Deckload Updates (2022-2024)

Most mid-sized (Panamax, Supramax, and Ultramax) bulk carriers were not delivered with the capability for deckload stowage. However, in many cases, the ships have sufficient deck and hatch cover strength and stability to carry significant deckloads. Adding the ability to carry deckloads, in addition to or instead of traditional bulk and breakbulk cargoes, below deck can add profitable flexibility to a bulk carrier fleet.

Adding deckload capability can involve:

• Strength assessment of the hatch covers and main deck to determine permissible uniform deckloads

• Updates to the Cargo Securing Manual to include lashing procedures for deckload cargo

• Assessment of the anchor and mooring arrangement for the ship’s new wind profile

• Updates to the intact stability calculations for the ship’s new wind profile

• Updates to the damage stability calculations to meet current probabilistic requirements

• Updates to the Loading Manual and Loading Computer software

• Submittal of amended documents and software for Classification Society approval.

We have completed deckload updates for the majority of the 26 GENCO Supramax and Ultramax ships.
